Technical Skills Resources

Excel, VBA, SAS, and SQL are the most common technical skills sought after for actuarial roles. Below are some great sites to become familiar with these programs/programming languages.

TIA - Technical Skills Course - I signed up for this course when I was applying for entry-level positions because I found it covered a lot of the basics and really keys in on how these skills are used in the actuarial industry. They offer a student discount, too.

SQL Tutorial - This is probably the best site to learn a lot of the basics for free.

SAS Tutorial - I like this tutorial because there are a lot of screenshots (and it's free).

Excel VBA Programming - A free guide to help learn the basics of VBA.

222 Excel Keyboard Shortcuts - Most of your work will probably be in excel, so familiar yourself with a lot of shortcuts to get your work done faster. Also, make sure you know how to create pivot tables, use a v-lookup and other various functions.

Actuarial Forums

Actuarial Outpost - Some people can be really intense, but this forum is a really great way to find answers to questions you may have and get additional insight on exams and the profession.

LinkedIn is also a really great way to connect with professionals already in the field and have your questions answered. Two of my favorite groups are Actuary Network and The Entry-Level Actuary.

Exam Resources

Coaching Actuaries - ADAPT is one of my favorite study tools for the preliminary exams (used for FM, MFE), you can also see a blog post I wrote for their site here

ASM Study Manuals - I've only ever used ASM manuals, but they are definitely very thorough with lots of practice problems (P, FM, MFE)

The Infinite Actuary - I have a hard time learning from videos, but throwing this up here since I know a lot of people who have successfully used this resource.

These are the resources I've found to be the most helpful on the preliminary exams.
